Current Update

We are making plans to return campers home to Greer!

It is hard to believe the amount of hurdles Montlure has faced with reopening our facilities in Greer, but progress does continue to be made and with the recent commitment by the USFS, we are making plans for our way back home.

In late 2021, by request of the United States Forest Service, Montlure Facilities team submitted an application to begin the lengthy National Environmental and Protection Agency (NEPA) approval process. As of the fall of 2023, the USFS and the Montlure Council came to a solution that will allow us back on the site as-is (pending some safety and environmental mitigationss) as we continue to go through the NEPA review which will last several years. With this agreement, we will be able to restore and renovate the current buildings and amenties which will allow proper accommodations for our campers and staff.

As of March 21, 2024, Montlure has received the final notification from the Forest Service regarding this agreement and the reinstatement of our Special Use Permit to use the facilities in Greer for our Summer 2024 program!

The Montlure Council and facilities team have devised a comprehensive plan for the necessary cleaning, repairs, and renovations required to open our site for summer camp in 2024.  We earnestly ask for your ongoing prayers, financial support, and volunteer hours to complete all the work necessary to make reopening a reality.

The 2024 scope of work will require the collective effort of our community to complete the extensive task list. We have actively held work camps for many years, but this Spring has quite a few opportunities to get involved on site, in order to reopen and welcome campers home.

See below for more information on work camps.

Donate

While it is crucial that we maintain our current fundraising goals for our GENERAL FUND in order to keep camp operations and programs continuing, there are other ways to directly impact our work on the camp site in Greer.

Our Friends of Montlure Program goes directly to our site in Greer, helping us with regular and ongoing maintenance, the utilities, and the insurance needed every year for our site in Greer. In addition, funds will be used for rennovation and restoration projects needed in order to prepare camp for campers. (See more below.)

Throughout the years, we have had groups of volunteers continually maintain and make needed repairs to our site in order to make an eventual return more feasible. Now with the effort to return campers home in 2024, we have many tasks and projects that will have to happen to make camp safe and ready for campers.

In 2023, work camp participants repaired the main sewer line, repaired the kitchen ceiling, repaired Elk cabin roof, replace deck planks on Lark cabin, replaced log benches at Twilight Chapel & Fire Circle, replaced two water heaters, built bridges to the bathhouse, restored pathways from cabins to the bathhouse, and more!

For Spring of 2024, some of the projects to complete include:

– Restore electric to Bathhouse and Porcupine Cabin
– Replace a water heater
– Revamp Nurse’s cabin/repair railing
– Kitchen/equipment up to code
– Add additional bathroom/shower facility
– Restore pathways
– Repair/Replace window and coverings
– Build fencing for USFS mitigation
– Drainage mitigation work
– Sewer line work
– Resurface concrete on basketball court
– Other general construction/repair prjects
– Deep cleaning projects
– and much more!

2024 Work Camps

Our goal is to fill every slot at our work camps. Both individuals and groups are welcome to attend.

We are in need of skilled construction and trades; please let us know of your abilities when you sign up. However, we also are in need of deep cleaners, odds and ends general repairs, and a few people at each work camp to prepare meals. There is something for everyone!

While work camps are at no cost to participants, for those who are able, we ask for a minimum donation of $50 per person to our Friends of Montlure fund to help cover the utility and supply costs for all work camps. (See more about the Friends of Montlure fund below.)

In addition, when we send out logistics and plans with work camp attendess, we will ask participants to cover a meal a meal for the weekend. (That typically includes bringing up meal supplies. However if someone signs up to cook/prepare meals and snacks, they would use the provided meal supplies.)

Contact

If you or your group would like to host a camp, or for further inquiries, please email Mike Gerlach, the chair of our facilities committee.

Current Need

As the council and its engineers work through the necessary steps for construction (both short term and long term), the ongoing costs of maintaining and insuring the site has chipped away at the funds available to support. Montlure has developed a sustainable operating fund dedicated to the maintenance, upkeep, work camp project costs, and insurance of the Greer facilities. The estimated annual cost for Greer is just over $27,000, before any major renovation projects. (Our camper registration fees do not cover any of these costs.)
