CIT Counselor in Training

We are excited to offer a an intentional Counselor in Training program! This program is designed specifically for 16 and 17 year olds. Typically, CITs are also Senior High campers, but that is not a requirement to apply. All CITs must be willing to learn, be interested in how outdoor ministry works, have a loving attitude, and be a positive role model for younger campers.

Only a limited number of CIT spots are available. If interested, we encourage candidates to apply early as we will not be able to accept all applicants.

2026 Summer CIT Program

Are you interested in applying for Summer Staff in the future?
Do you like working with kids?
Are you curious how Outdoor ministry works?
Do you want to grow in your leadership skills?

If you answered yes to the questions above, we encourage you to apply to be a CIT (Counselor in Training)!

During the week, CITs will learn and grow together as they work with different Montlure staff to understand what it takes behind-the-scenes to run summer camp. As they work in different areas of camp, they will also have time to debrief and reflect on what they are experiencing, the challenges, and how to improve in their leadership abilities. CITs will also work together on a week long project to carryout at the end of the week.

First year CITs will be scheduled for Juniors I (June 28-July 3), or Juniors II (July 6-10). Expected arrival is the afternoon prior to scheduled week for orientation. Departue at 12:30pm at the end of the camp week. (Transportation is not provided to camp, however, CITs are welcome to ride the bus home with campers at the end of the week.)

CIT I

The Level I CIT program is designed for first-year CITs who are ready to explore what it means to serve on summer staff. CITs will be housed in camper cabins and will rotate through each of our primary staff roles—Counselor, Rec Team, and Kitchen Team—to gain a broad understanding of camp leadership and operations. CITs follow a modified schedule that allows them to participate in camp life while completing daily duties and learning alongside staff. While in a supportive and hands-on learning environment, CITs will receive guidance and mentorship throughout the week.

The CIT I program is offered during
Juniors Camp sessions:
June 28–July 3 or July 6–10

CIT II

The Level II CIT program is designed for those who have already completed CIT I. CITs will choose a primary role for the week—Counselor, Rec Team, or Kitchen Team—and will step more fully into the day-to-day responsibilities of that position. While still in a learning environment with guidance and regular check-ins, CIT IIs will take greater ownership of tasks and leadership moments. They will work closely alongside other staff and function as an integrated member of the team, without holding ultimate responsibility for camper care or program leadership.

The CIT II program is offered
during Junior High or Juniors Camp sessions:
June 21-26, June 28-July 3, or July 6-10

What will CITs do?

Beyond intentionally developing leadership skills, and debriefing and learning with leadership staff, CITs will have hands on experience such as:

* Plan and lead mini all-camp games
* Assist Rec Staff with setup/clean up
* Assist Kitchen Staff on particular meals
* Participate in/co-lead small groups
* Plan and perform daily skits
* Plan and implement end of week Carnival
* And more!

Who should apply?

Any 16 or 17 year old (rising 11th and 12th graders) that wants to learn about outdoor ministry! If you have a postitve attitude, like working with kids, and are looking to further your leadership development… then you may just be our next CIT!

(For 18 year olds, we encourage you to apply for a volunteer position or a summer staff position if you already have experience.)

Who should not apply?

While being a CIT is a lot of fun, we take working at camp seriously. Being a CIT is not about extending your own camp experience. It is about learning, growing, and working, while also putting younger campers’ needs above your own. You will be challenged, and you will be asked to do things that may be out of your comfort zone.

Being a CIT (or being on staff) isn’t for everybody and that is okay! Know yourself. And know what you are applying for.

Will there be oversight?

Yes! One of our Montlure staff will lead the CIT program, serving as a counselor to the CITs. In addition, the leadership staff, rec staff, and kitchen staff will also have sessions they lead with CITs and/or will be working directly with them on projects and tasks. CITs will not be unsupervised, but will be expected to follow their own schedule and take personal accountability.

Is there a cost?

At this time, there is no cost for CITs to attend the program. Montlure will cover the costs that come with lodging, meals, supplies, and staff oversight. We ask for CITs to provide their own transportation to camp. They are welcome to ride the bus home on the last day of camp.

(If families would like to make a donation to help cover the incurred costs, we will provide ways to do so. Starting in 2027, there will be a nominal fee to help cover some of the incurred baseline costs.)
